West 47th Street between 5th and 6th Avenue in Midtown Manhattan is the world's diamond capital. More diamonds and precious stones pass through one block than anywhere else on earth. For anyone buying a custom or iced out watch in New York, this is where you start.

What Is the Diamond District?

The Diamond District is not a single store — it's a dense cluster of hundreds of independent dealers, setters, polishers, and wholesalers operating out of booths inside multi-floor exchanges, plus storefronts on the street. The two main buildings are 36 W 47th St and 47 W 47th St. Inside, booths are numbered. Dealers have been in the same booth for decades.

The volume of transactions means prices are competitive and expertise is real. If you're buying diamonds, getting a piece custom set, or acquiring a rare watch, this is where it happens.

What to Know Before You Go

• Know what you want:The District is overwhelming. Walk in with a specific ask — 'I want a flooded G-Shock' or 'I'm looking at a Datejust bezel replacement' — not a vague browse.
• Don't accept the first price:This is a wholesale market. Everything is negotiable. A first quote is rarely the final price.
• Verify authenticity:Bring a loupe or ask for a jeweler's loupe. Legitimate dealers will not object to scrutiny.
• Ask about the setting process:A good setter will explain exactly what they're going to do to your watch. If they're vague, walk away.
• Get documentation:Any serious piece should come with a receipt that includes stone description, carat weight, and price paid.
